Ratchaprapha Dam drowned a valley in 1982, and the 165-square-kilometre reservoir that rose behind it became one of Southeast Asia's most arresting landscapes. Cheow Lan Lake submerged lowland forest, leaving a labyrinth of limestone towers — some 960 metres tall — jutting from water the colour of jade.
The dam itself was built to generate hydroelectric power for southern Thailand, but the reservoir inadvertently created habitat for Asian elephants, sun bears, and the critically endangered Rafflesia kerrii, a parasitic flower that blooms in the surrounding rainforest only a few weeks each year.
Khao Sok National Park, which cradles the lake's eastern shore, predates the reservoir by three years and protects 739 square kilometres of one of the world's oldest evergreen rainforests — geologists place its age at 160 million years, older than the Amazon. The park's interior remains roadless. Access is by longtail boat or kayak, and most visitors see only the lake's northern arm, where limestone cliffs plunge directly into water deep enough that submerged trees still stand intact thirty metres below the surface. Hornbills nest in the karst walls; macaques forage along the shoreline at dawn.
A Khao Sok lake tour 1 day departs from nearby towns — Phuket, Khao Lak, or the park's own entrance village — and typically covers between fifteen and twenty kilometres of water. Longtail boats carry six to ten passengers and navigate into narrow channels between karsts, where the water becomes mirror-still and the forest canopy closes overhead. Most itineraries include a stop at Pakarang Cave or Nam Talu Cave, both of which require wading through shallow water and contain limestone formations carved over millennia. Some trips add kayaking through flooded gullies or a swim near one of the lake's floating bamboo raft houses, which serve as ranger stations and rudimentary guesthouses.
The conservation fee of 300 baht, valid for twenty-four hours, is collected at the park checkpoint before you reach the dam pier. The lake itself is open daily from eight in the morning until half past four in the afternoon, though most tours aim to reach the water by nine to avoid the midday heat, when humidity rises above ninety per cent and wildlife retreats into the forest. The reservoir's water level fluctuates by several metres between the dry and monsoon seasons, altering which caves and channels remain navigable.
